Justin Lester

Today we had a visitor at assembly and his name is Justin Lester. He is from Wellington City Council. He told us about his job as a Wellington City Councilor and we asked him lots of questions.

We can contact him if we have any suggestions to make Tawa a better place.
We might contact him about getting a path on the reserve going down from Victory Cres to the Main Road.
He seems like a real nice guy.

Science Week- Day 5 Seeing how liquids float and sink

We learnt a bit about density today! We put some golden syrup in a large glass, then some vegetable oil, and lastly some water (that had blue food colouring in it!) Surprisingly the blue water sunk below the oil. It looked awesome! We then tried to float different things from around the classroom- a large glass marble sunk all the way, A small flat marble sat on the golden syrup, as did a paper clip. A counter sat on the water.

Science Week- Day 4 Form a gas!

We managed to blow up a balloon without even using a pump! First we put some vinegar in a bottle. Then, using a funnel, we filled a balloon with Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking soda). We then stretched the neck of the balloon over the bottle and lifted the balloon so the Sodium Bicarbonate fell into the vinegar. This caused the same reaction you get when making volcanoes. What was really cool though was the carbon dioxide gas that was being released causing the balloon to inflate.

Science Week- Day 3 Discovering the gases in the air

We placed a candle in a bowl of water, lit it then covered it with a jar. The candle went out as it used up the oxygen, but what was really cool was the way the water level inside the jar rose to replace the oxygen

Science Week- Day 2 Seeing Plants Drinking!

We poured a little food colouring mixed with water in each jar and added a white flower. Very slowly they changed colour.

Science Week- Day 1 Egg in a bottle

We checked that a hard boiled egg could sit on top of a bottle without slipping through. Then took it off and
lit a piece of newspaper and carefully placed it inside the milk bottle. Quickly put the egg back on the neck of the bottle and watched what happened.
The egg got sucked a way down the neck of the bottle.
Check out this video to see what happens....
Amazing!
